Dennis graduated from Elkland High School in 1969. He was twice selected on the first team all-league team and once scored 42 points in a Christmas tournament game. He went on to play in the highly competitive Valley Basketball League of numerous Cowanesque Valley teams as well as teams from Wellsboro and Corning, NY. He led the league in scoring his first two years averaging 35 and 30 points, respectively.
