Dr. Gwen Carpenter Whelchel is a 1989 graduate of Cowanesque Valley High School, where she played Varsity singles and doubles and was three-time MVP, and three-time Scholar Athlete. Gwen played girls basketball for three years and her freshman year played boys JV basketball. She also ran hurdles in track and field.

Gwen graduated from Edinboro University in 1993. She played 4th seed on the varsity tennis team for three years and 2nd seed doubles for three years. She played a qualifying tournament at the US Open in 1993 at Flushing Meadows, NY.

In 2005 she set a Georgia state record in power lifting with a 385 lb dead lift. In 2006 she set a world record 315 lbs. in the bench press. She is still active in power lifting today.

In 2016 Gwen received her doctorate in Performance Psychology and is currently teaching Health and Physical Education in Georgia.
