Louis is a 1966 graduate of Wellsboro High School, where he played football for three years. In 1965 he was Back of the Year, and Captain. In 1966 he was voted Most Valuable Player. Lou also participated in Track and Field for three years and was a member of the record holding mile relay team.

Lou attended Mercersburg Academy after graduation. In 1967 he was the starting Quarterback until the 3rd game when his ankle was broken by College Hall Of Fame, NFL Hall of Fame, player Jack Ham. He then attended Lafayette College where he played Lacrosse for four years and was team Captain in 1971. He played Rugby in Switzerland in 1973 and 74.

At Wellsboro Lou was in National Honor Society, Junior class president, Varsity club president, and in 2016 was named Wellsboro HS Alumnus of the year.
